Should I Tile My Shower?
So, you are thinking of ripping out your existing one-piece shower stall and replacing it with a beautiful tiled masterpiece.
But how do you get started?
I always recommend choosing the basics first – cabinets, counter and fixtures. The floor and shower wall tile will need to coordinate with all of these aspects to unify the completed bathroom design. Removing the existing one piece unit is pretty easy – shut off water supply and very carefully cut the one piece unit from the studded frame.
Once open to the framing, I suggest installing the following Schluter products:
- Kerdi wall board – this is a light weight foam board coated with the Kerdi waterproofing – Kerdi tape will be required to seal all seams
- Kerdi pitched floor panels & curb (standard sizes available)
- Kerdi drain with ABS or PVC connectors to existing plumbing
When these items are all in place, the tile can now be installed. Your choice of wall tile is almost endless in ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, glass, etc.
